Snowy Mountains January 2012

5 Days: Wednesday 25th to Sunday 29th January 2012

4 Nights: Cosy lodge accommodation in Thredbo Alpine Village

The Kosciuszko National Park features the highest mountains in Australia. Fabulous granite formations, green alpine meadows filled with wild flowers and broad views in all directions make for an excellent summer walking holiday. Park Treks walking holiday to the Snowy Mountains in January coincides with prolific wild flower activity, gorgeous clear days and the opportunity to escape the sweltering heat that the rest of mainland Australia can often experience.

DAY 1

The trip begins in Canberra at 9.00am where we arrange to pick everyone up from a central location in the CBD. By midmorning we’ll be serving you a filling morning tea in the Sublime Cafe in the town of Jindabyne where we make a brief visit to the excellent Snowy Mountains Visitor Information Centre. From here we head off for lunch at our place of stay for the next four nights in our ski lodge nestled in the heart of the alpine village of Thredbo. After lunch we’ll head out to Dead Horse Gap and follow the path alongside the cascading waters of the Thredbo River. Then its time to return to our lodge for a great evening meal.

About our place of stay...

For the four nights we are away we stay in the lovely Schuss Ski Lodge. The views from the lounge area overlook the entire length of the Thredbo Ski Village and up to the Main Range. It makes relaxing at days end all the more special. Each room has twin share arrangements with it's own ensuite. You can opt to have a room to yourself for an additional $200.00. Otherwise we can pair you up with another same sex member of the trip. Finally, all of our meals are prepared in the extensive kitchen, making sure you get served the very best meals as well as having a great choice for breakfast and plenty to choose from for lunch.

DAY 2

We’ll get underway today with one of the areas best short walks to the Porcupine. Perhaps lunch out at Rainbow Lake. Then after lunch we have several options depending on weather and prevailing conditions. We may walk the Pallaigo Track from Sawpit Creek down to Thredo or walk out to Rennix Gap. From there it’s back to our place of stay where a welcome cuppa awaits.

DAY 3

Today’s walk begins from Charlottes Pass where we wander down to cross the Snowy River and make our way up to Blue Lakes. This is a most dramatic location with a series of cascading waterfalls finishing in a deep blue pool. Blue Lakes is arguably the jewel in the crown of the Kosciusko National Park. Our journey continues as we head around to Mt Twynam with superb views to the north of the park. Those that want a more challenging wander can continue down Crummer Spur into Blue Lake while the moderate option is to simply retrace your steps. Once you’re back at the coach it’ll be time for an ice cream and then back to our lodge.

DAY 4

Today we’ll make our way to the highest point in the country, Mt. Kosciuszko. The days walk gets underway nice and early as we take the chair lift up from the Thredbo Village and make our way up onto the Main Range. Passing snowdrifts that survive year round, stopping to appreciate the awesome splendour of our surrounds we finally arrive at the top of Mt. Kosciuszko. Our return journey follows along a beautifully shaded trail that affords us superb views over the southern end of Australia's High Country.

Tonight we eat out at a local restaurant (OE).

This is a long days walking of approximately 18 kilometres

DAY 5
