Snowy Mountains

5 days
4 nights
Monday 23rd February to Friday 27th February 2009
cosy lodge accommodation in Thredbo Alpine Village

The Kosciuszko National Park features the highest mountains in Australia. Fabulous granite formations, green alpine meadows filled with wild flowers and broad views in all directions make for an excellent walking holiday. Our visit in January coincides with prolific wild flower activity and provides the opportunity to escape the sweltering heat that the rest of mainland Australia can often experience.

DAY 1

The trip begins in Canberra at 9.00am where we arrange to pick everyone up from a central location in the CBD. By midmorning we値l be serving you a filling morning tea in the Sublime Cafe in the town of Jindabyne where we make a brief visit to the excellent Snowy Mountains Visitor Information Centre. From here we head off for lunch at our place of stay for the next four nights in our ski lodge nestled in the heart of the alpine village of Thredbo. After lunch we値l head out to Dead Horse Gap and follow the path alongside the cascading waters of the Thredbo River. Then its time to return to our lodge for a great evening meal.

7 kilometres walking

DAY 2

We値l get underway today with one of the areas best short walks to the Porcupine. Then we head out for a walk to Rennix Gap with superb views over the northern end of the Kosciuosko National Park. Finally we return to our vehicle where a welcome cuppa awaits.

17 kilometres walking

DAY 3

Today痴 walk begins from Charlottes Pass where we cross the Snowy River and make our way up to Blue Lakes.  This is a most dramatic location with a series of cascading waterfalls finishing in a deep blue pool. Our journey continues as we head down to Hedley Tarn through a great network of trails and then back to our coach. Perhaps if time permits we値l do a delightful short walk out to Rainbow Lake before returning to our Thredbo abode.

13 kilometres walking

DAY 4

Today we値l make our way to the highest point in the country, Mt. Kosciuszko. The days walk gets underway nice and early as we take the chair lift up from the Thredbo Village and make our way up onto the Main Range. Passing snowdrifts that survive year round, stopping to appreciate the awesome splendour of our surrounds we finally arrive at the top of Mt. Kosciuszko. Our return journey follows along a beautifully shaded trail that affords us superb views over the southern end of Australia's High Country.

This is a long days walking of approximately 18 kilometres

Tonight we eat out at a local restaurant (OE).

DAY 5

Take your time to have breakfast and then pack up.  We have an easy morning lined up firstly with a gorgeous short walk around Thredbo Village called the Meadows Nature Track. Perhaps a cuppa in Thredbo before we head down to do a pre-lunch walk around Bullocks Flat. Then it痴 into Jindabyne for a final luncheon (OE). Alas by mid-afternoon we have to make our way back to Canberra where we finish at 4.00pm.
