Mount Buffalo’s capacity to endear itself to those who visit it once is why we couldn’t wait to return to a place that has been at the heart of some of our best trip experiences. The combination of excellent trails, fascinating rock formations, superb views and green meadows laced with deep waterways provides all of the ingredients as a terrific place to stage a four day walking holiday. Add to that a cosy campfire plus Park Trek’s usual vibrant social buzz along with camping at Lake Catani and you have the makings of a great bush experience.
DAY 1
Departing Melbourne our first port of call is Euroa where our favourite cafe is ready to serves us a plentiful morning tea. Our days journey finishes around lunchtime on the plateau of Mount Buffalo where we can enjoy lunch, refresh ourselves and head off for a 3 hour afternoon walk. When we return it’s time to put up the tents, settle around the campfire and enjoy Park Trek’s famous hospitality while the bbq is put to work.
6 kilometres walking
DAY 2
Today’s walk sees us enjoying a fabulous alpine ramble to the top of Mount Dunn for morning tea. Then we wander through alpine meadows and strands of snow gums to get to lunch at Og, Gog and Magog, an oddly named but physically inspiring place for lunch. The afternoon walk follows the trail with views overlooking Lake Buffalo and then back to the coach and back to camp for a cuppa.
DAY 3
Let’s try a more leisurely wander this morning. After breakfast it’s time to head to Viewpoint, a location that overlooks the Buckland Valley and then back to camp for morning tea. Then onto South Buffalo viewpoint for a superb half day walk that overlooks the southern end of the Alpine National Park. Then an optional mid afternoon walk out to Dicksons Falls before a relax back at camp. As the sun lowers itself we climb the Horn for the best alpine view in Victoria. Once we are back at camp it’s the warmth of the fire and the evening fireside chatter.
DAY 4
All good things must pass but not before we walk from camp out to the Buffalo Gorge and a wander around this iconic location. This mornings three hour wander underscores why generations of people have come back to Mount Buffalo. Alas we must move on as lunch in Myrtleford (OE) awaits and then the journey back to Melbourne which concludes around 6.00pm.
