Kakadu in the Wet 2012

7 Days: Sunday 18th to Saturday 24th March 2012

3 Nights: Lakeview Park, Jabiru

2 Nights: Knotts Crossing Resort, Katherine

1 Nights: Rum Jungle Motel, Litchfield/Batchelor

The natural world explodes with life during the month of March in Kakadu, Australia痴 largest national park. During our seven days away we値l experience the green glory of this biologically rich landscape. Driving down the Arnhem Highway with spear grass growing 3 metres high either side of the road, or perhaps being out in a monsoon rainforest when the clouds gather and the rain tumbles down through the lush growth are experiences that will stay with you forever. We値l guide you through some of the best walks to give you one of the most amazing visual experiences you値l find in Australia at anytime of the year.

DAY 1

We’ll depart from the Darwin Transit Centre at 9.00am and head straight out to Fogg Dam. It’s only a 50 minute drive but the amount of wildlife that you’ll experience is just amazing. Plenty to photograph. Then it’s time for morning tea at the Windows on the Wetland and some local knowledge from a local ranger. Then it’s time to head to the Bark Hut for lunch before we make tracks to Jabiru for our first nights’ accommodation. Perhaps if time permits we’ll drop into the Bowali Visitors Centre to look over one of the most impressive interpretive displays found anywhere. This evening we’ll settle into the lush surrounds of the Lakeview Park.

DAY 2

This morning we head into Gubara, one of Kakadu’s most peaceful locations. The waterfalls in Gubara teem with life and they afford us some time in a monsoon forest with the chance to swim and relax. Then we’ll head to Nanguluwur Art site and then onto the art site at Anbangbang Shelter. After our rock art tour we head up to the lookout for a superb view overlooking the wetlands.

DAY 3

Time to board a flight and head into Arnhemland for one of the most brilliant days out on the trip. We fly out over the Magela Creek floodplains with great views of the thundering watercourses of Jim Jim Falls and Twin Falls that surge off the escarpment at this time of the year. Our day in Gunbalanya (Oenpelli) also includes a visit to the Injaluk Art Centre and perhaps, if conditions permit, a nearby rock art site. By mid-afternoon we are returning to Lakeview Park and some much needed time out.

DAY 4

We depart Jabiru this morning and make our way down the Kakadu Highway to Cooinda/Yellow Waters where first we visit the Warradjan Cultural Centre for one of the best indigenous displays found anywhere in Australia. After a cuppa it’s time to board the highly renowned Yellow Waters cruises that takes us out over the South Alligator Floodplains. It’s a first class experience and truly unforgettable. Then we make our way down the Kakadu Highway with a few possible walks along the way before we find our way into Katherine for the night and our place of stay in at Knotts Crossing Resort.

DAY 5

After a sumptuous buffet breakfast it’s time to head up to Nitmiluk (Katherine) Gorge for a delightful morning walk. Then by early afternoon we’ll be enjoying a welcome coffee at the visitor centre before boarding one of their boats for a cruise up the Katherine Gorge. This evening we dine at Katies Bistro for a terrific a la carte meal (OE).

DAY 6

We’ll leave Katherine and head directly north into Litchfield National Park. We intend to arrive in around lunchtime. Our first port of call will be Wangi Falls followed by Walkers Creek. Both offer excellent short walks and round off the day nicely.

DAY 7

With plenty still to do we head for the Termite Mounds, followed by Tolmer Falls and finally Florence Falls and Buley Rockholes. Then it’s on to the Batchelor Butterfly Farm for lunch (OE) and then a sad farewell to what will have been a trip of a lifetime.

Price: $ 2600 (ex Darwin) (incl. GST)
