Great Ocean Walk December 2009

4 days

Tuesday 1st to Friday 4th December 2009

3 nights twin share accommodation at the Cape Otway Lighthouse

This is a world class walking experience. Beautiful secluded coves and wild and rugged cliff tops that were once inaccessible are now ours to enjoy as this newly opened track passes through a sensational variety of scenery. We have compiled a four-day walking holiday that captures the very best this new walk has to offer combined with the authentic charm of staying at Cape Otway, easily the best coastal location along Victoria’s famous Great Ocean Road.

DAY 1

We would ask that everyone be at the Victorian Arts Centre for an 8:30am departure. We’ll stop for morning tea in the small town of Winchelsea before making our way to the start of the walk at Apollo Bay. Here we follow a delightful six-kilometre section of the walk through to Elliott River. It’s a great introduction to what the next three days will have install for you. Our walk finishes late afternoon and we head for our place of stay in the Cape Otway Lighthouse Cottages.

DAY 2

The recent opening of the Great Ocean Walk gives us the opportunity to see some of the best scenery in the Otways. Today’s walk starts right outside our front door as we follow the Great Ocean Walk along the cliff tops overlooking Station Beach. We lunch at a shady campsite along the Glen Aire River, with toilet facilities close at hand. Our days’ walking continues as we finish at the spectacular Castle Cove. We’d describe today’s walking as medium as the track is mildly undulating and easy to walk. Then it’s time to return to our lodgings and a filling evening meal.

You do have the option of foregoing the after lunch section of the walk if you feel you've walked far enough. We can drive you back to our place of stay if you prefer instead to put your feet up and relax.

DAY 3

Today’s walk takes in the most scenic, dramatic and challenging section of the Great Ocean Walk. The rangers who laid this section of the track had in mind the idea of opening up the most amazing length of track along the entire walk and giving you the most memorable days walk. Leaving Milanesia Beach our lunchtime is spent at Ryans Den, surely one of the best lunch spots in the state (with toilets as well!). Then it’s on to Moonlight Head for a dramatic finale before heading into Lavers Hill for a well-earned and much appreciated coffee (OE).

10 kilometres walking

DAY 4

Our final day sees us heading to Princetown where one of the easiest sections of the walk stretches our before us. We will actually walk the final section of the walk towards the Twelve Apostles appearing more pronounced ahead in the distance. Lunchtime is spent at the Twelve Apostles Visitor Centre so you have time to appreciate these most famous landmarks. Then it’s time for a coffee in Colac (OE) before returning you to Melbourne late afternoon.
