How hard is the walking?

Park Trek tours are suitable for healthy people of all ages who enjoy walking. We cover lot of different terrains but you will find nearly all of our walks are along well forged walking trails. Most walks will involve some degree of uphill or undulations and some, though on well formed tracks, will have tree roots, rocks, some small streams and uneven ground to negotiate. We walk at a comfortable pace with plenty of photo and snack stops, and our emphasis is on appreciating the wilderness areas we pass through. As we have two guides on each tour we can cater for different walking abilities - no one gets left behind, and you do not need to participate in all the walks.

Do I need any special equipment?

On most of our trips we are able to provide you with a comfortable day pack. You will need to bring with you a waterproof jacket, good quality lightweight walking boots and increasingly we are recommending telescopic walking poles. On some walks the terrain is quite rocky and uneven, so if you are comfortable hiking with a walking pole we encourage you to bring it along. We will have a more comprehensive list of what to bring which is available on this website and is also sent out to you at the time of booking.

Do I have to carry a heavy pack?

No - on Park Trek tours you only need to carry a day pack with your lunch, jacket, water, camera etc.

How should I prepare for my tour?

If you are a regular walker, walking once a week for a half to full day, then you’ll find that the Park Trek programme entirely achievable. If this is your first time on a walking tour then we recommend you put in a reasonable amount of training so you gain the most enjoyment out of your experience. We encourage you to get out and do some walking before your tour, starting out with say half an hour a day and gradually building up to 2-3 longer walks each week including some uphill. The secret is to start slowly and increase your exercise gradually. The fitter you are the more enjoyable your tour will be.

What if I'm travelling alone?

Accommodation is based on twin share, with a combination of private and shared facilities. Single travellers are welcome on our walking tours, in fact they comprise a very large proportion of our guests. Often you have a choice of either sharing a room in a twin share arrangement with another person of the same gender (if available) or pay a single supplement and have your own room. On some trips single supplement is not available as the accommodation that is available to us is limited.

When is the best time to go?

Each season has its advantages: Springtime (September - November) features flowering plants, fewer people, cooler walking temperatures, greener scenery and delightful watercourses. Summer (December - February) is the time when we head into the alpine high country to escape the heat and enjoy natures floral display. While the days are a little warmer with longer daylight you’ll find more people on the tracks and trails. Autumn (March - May) features generally settled weather and mild temperatures. During our Winter period (June to August) we head to Central Australia, Kakadu and onwards to South East Queensland. These are the periods that offer the walker the most comfortable experience, but also coincide with generally higher visitation from other travellers.

Our rule of thumb is come prepared for anything regardless of the season, and you will have a great time.

What's included in the price of my holiday?

Park Trek is committed to providing excellent value for money tours.  Accommodation, most meals, one or more guides accompanying the trip, transport, parks enterance fees are all included in the tour price. Additional optional activities are sometimes available (such as the Ridgetop 4WD trip at Arkaroola) and these activities are made available to you at an additional fee.
